Summary

When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious。 Then wary。 Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead。

From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Surete du Quebec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose。 Yet he does nothing。 What can he do? Only watch and wait。 And hope his mounting fears are not realized。

But when the figure vanishes overnight and a body is discovered, it falls to Gamache to discover if a debt has been paid or levied。

Months later, on a steamy July day as the trial for the accused begins in Montreal, Chief Superintendent Gamache continues to struggle with actions he set in motion that bitter November, from which there is no going back。 More than the accused is on trial。 Gamache's own conscience is standing in judgment。

In Glass Houses, her latest utterly gripping book, number-one New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny shatters the conventions of the crime novel to explore what Gandhi called the court of conscience。 A court that supersedes all others。

I may never have read this if not for book club, but it was impossible to put down!

I love the Inspector Gamache series but this wasn't one of the best, in my opinion。 Some parts were fascinating, but I got confused from the very frequent changes of time and setting。 I love the Inspector Gamache series but this wasn't one of the best, in my opinion。 Some parts were fascinating, but I got confused from the very frequent changes of time and setting。 。。。more

I love all of Louise Penny's books thus far。 This one had twists and turns and with the great narration, I was there in Three Pines,in Montreal, and held in suspense as I was in thrall to the story。 If you listen to the audio book, be sure to listen to the author comments and the conversation at the end。 Both very well done。 I love all of Louise Penny's books thus far。 This one had twists and turns and with the great narration, I was there in Three Pines,in Montreal, and held in suspense as I was in thrall to the story。 If you listen to the audio book, be sure to listen to the author comments and the conversation at the end。 Both very well done。 。。。more

I usually save my 5 star ratings for books that are well written, gripping and thought provoking。 Glass Houses is not what I consider thought provoking but I rate it 5 because of the skill Louise Penny has to draw me into the story and make me feel so comfortable with Three Pines and the familiar and loved characters。 Reading her books is like talking with a dear friend while curled up with a cup of tea and a blazing fire。 So satisfying。

Always good。

amazingRepeatedly throughout this book, Gamache asks others to trust him, and to trust him blindly, without reason, without cause, in the face of reasons completely to the contrary。 But because of who he is, the core of the man, they do。 And so it is with Louise Penny, who leads us on these excursions that seem so hard, so fraught。 She says “trust me to see this through。” And I do, and even though my heart threatens to break, I continue to go blindly where she leads me。Fantastic book in an excel amazingRepeatedly throughout this book, Gamache asks others to trust him, and to trust him blindly, without reason, without cause, in the face of reasons completely to the contrary。 But because of who he is, the core of the man, they do。 And so it is with Louise Penny, who leads us on these excursions that seem so hard, so fraught。 She says “trust me to see this through。” And I do, and even though my heart threatens to break, I continue to go blindly where she leads me。Fantastic book in an excellent series。 Can’t wait to read the next。 。。。more

I suppose it was inevitable that Reine-Marie is (finally) involved in a major way of a crime committed in Three Pines and her husband and son-in-law need to solve the crime while remaining as distant and hands-off as possible。I had a hard time trying to keep up with the multiple story lines as they weaved in and out together or separately before finally coming together at the end。 Interesting that Gamache as he perjured himself in court, held back valuable information and allowed drugs to enter I suppose it was inevitable that Reine-Marie is (finally) involved in a major way of a crime committed in Three Pines and her husband and son-in-law need to solve the crime while remaining as distant and hands-off as possible。I had a hard time trying to keep up with the multiple story lines as they weaved in and out together or separately before finally coming together at the end。 Interesting that Gamache as he perjured himself in court, held back valuable information and allowed drugs to enter his beloved province, though all for a good reason and the bad guys were ultimately dealt with by the courts and I've 5 more books to read in the series and it'll be interesting to see where all this leadsIs anyone else getting tired of Ruth and her sarcastic and mean-spirited attitude to almost everyone in Three Pines and the Surete? And, the constant bistro meals where the residents discuss cases? Maybe after 13 books of this it is becoming tiresome, for me anyway。 。。。more

This is my favorite book so far this year。 It's a murder mystery but with unexpected characters and back stories。 I didn't realize that this was a series。 I will likely start at the beginning and work my way through。I highly recommend!! Inspector Armand Gamache and the village of Three Pines made their first appearances in the novel Still Life, by Louise Penny, in 2005。 (For those still unfamiliar, Three Pines is a fictional village in southern Quebec, very near the Vermont border, and Gamache is an Inspector with the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force。) Still Life appeared to be a fairly typical cozy murder mystery。 However, each subsequent book in the series has embodied a significant subplot that not only provides Inspector Armand Gamache and the village of Three Pines made their first appearances in the novel Still Life, by Louise Penny, in 2005。 (For those still unfamiliar, Three Pines is a fictional village in southern Quebec, very near the Vermont border, and Gamache is an Inspector with the Sûreté du Québec, the provincial police force。) Still Life appeared to be a fairly typical cozy murder mystery。 However, each subsequent book in the series has embodied a significant subplot that not only provides a background for the murder but shows there is much more at stake than is first apparent。 The resolution of the subplot usually is the occasion for more action and violence than would be found in a normal "cozy。" Therefore most of the books fit better into the "suspense" or "thriller" genres。Glass Houses came out in 2017, and is the 13th book in the Inspector Gamache series。 It can be read without reading any of the previous books first, but a tremendous amount of nuance will be lost by reading it without an understanding of the arc of Gamache's career, the complexities of the relationships among the characters, or the recent history of the village of Three Pines。 And, in my opinion, it is the cast of characters who live in the village that really make this series special。The narration in Glass Houses bounces between two time periods a little less than a year apart。 (And, I sometimes had to pause at the beginning of a section, to make sure I was mentally in the right time period。 That is perhaps my one criticism of this book。) The early time period covers a week or so from Halloween into early November。 The later time period takes place in the heat of summer。 At Halloween, four visitors and two newcomers are in Three Pines。 Lea Roux, her husband Matheo Bissonette, Patrick Evans, and his wife Katie Evans were all students at the University together and have been visiting Three Pines yearly for an annual reunion。 Anton is a new employee at the Bistro, hired as a dishwasher but hoping to be allowed to move up to chef。 Jacqueline is the new assistant at the bakery。 A person in a costume personifying Death appears and simply stands on the village green, saying nothing。 This is apparently a version of an "El Cobrador del Frac," a method of collecting debts by stalking and embarrassing a person。 A few days later, Katie Evans' body is found in the basement of the church, dressed in the Cobrador's costume, setting off an investigation。 In the summer, Katie's murderer has been arrested and is being tried in court, but the lead prosecutor is being unusually antagonistic as he questions Gamache。 Meanwhile, the Sûreté is tracking drug shipments that leave Montreal and seem to cross the border into the USA somewhere very near to Three Pines。 Gamache and his team employ a very unusual strategy to try to defeat the cartel responsible for shipping the drugs。I rated this book 5 stars。 I checked out a physical copy from my local library。 。。。more

This one is tough to listen to as an audiobook, switching back and forth from present to past。 But I loved the ending and how it sets up the next book。

I don’t even know how to review Gamache anymore。 It’s just so good。 I’m in a place now where I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book but I also don’t want to rush the journey, but relish it。 Much like the last book, we see new layers to his character and the grey areas that come with his work。 This one has a nice back and forth I’d present day and past storyline, weaving throughout until the resolution。 I enjoyed the new approach in this book! Her books just get better and better。 I read them for peace and escape。 It sounds odd to read a murder mystery for peace, but the love, compassion, and kindness her characters show as they deal with the hard stuff of life, is somehow, a comfort。

Another great story from Ms。 Penny。No spoilers, but here is the interesting true historical thing woven into the book that you're going to Google: Cobrador del Frac。 Another great story from Ms。 Penny。No spoilers, but here is the interesting true historical thing woven into the book that you're going to Google: Cobrador del Frac。 。。。more

The title, Glass Houses, is a reference to the type of houses thatKatie Evans, the architect who gets killed in this book, built。 She had studied how to adapt these glass houses to harsh climates such as that in Quebec。 She is currently building one on the Magadalen Islands, “the Maggies。” Coincidentally, the big drug shipment at the center of the plot arrives at the Magdalen Islands on board a cargo ship from China。 There is a mention of how there must be quite a bit of money in the Magdalene Islands these days to build this type of house… maybe that is a connection and reference to the drug money there。 In the end, Katie Evans doesn’t really have a direct connection to the drugs or the drug lords, but instead is killed by the sister , Jacqueline, of her ex college boyfriend, Eduardo。 It’s an indirect connection。 Eduardo got his drugs from Antoine who turns out to be the big Canadian drug lord in the book。 Jaqueline hates Antoine because she blames him for the death of her brother。 She also hates Katie Evans for breaking up with him so many years ago and sending him into a major depression。 The book is mostly about the idea of conscience。 References are made to a higher court… the court of conscience。 This is from a quote by Gandhi。 “There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience。 It supersedes all other courts。” Gamache seems to be operating from this court when he decides to perjure himself in the court of law。 The higher purpose is that he ends up stopping the drug lords and the fentanyl trade。 He gets the big drug lords in the end。 The other conscience in Glass Houses is represented by the Cobrador。 Louise Penny tells us in the afterword that the modern Cobrador is a real character in history。 But she goes beyond this with her ancient Cobrador and weaves a whole fictional story about the ancient figure。 I loved the ending where Clara is displaying her paintings of the residents of Three Pines。 It turns out that hidden in the pupils of each person she has painted a reflection of someone dearly loved by him/her – like looking into a glass house, another reference to the title! So Rosa, the duck, has a reflection of Ruth in her eyes。 “Deep in Rosa’s haughty eyes, there was another tiny perfect finished portrait。 Of Ruth。 She was leaning toward Rosa。 Offering the nest of old flannel sheets。 Offering a home。 It was a portrait of adoration。 Of salvation。 Of intimacy。 It was a moment so tender, so vulnerable, Reine-Marie, Myrna, Olivier felt like voyeurs。 Looking into a glass home。 But they didn’t feel dirty。 They felt lucky。 To see such love。 They went from painting to painting。 There, in each of their eyes, a loved one was perfectly reflected。 Myrna turned to Clara, across the room。 Across the shattered, broken bistro。 Across the lifetimes of friendship。 Clara, who knew that bodies might come and go, but love was eternal。”Louise Penny。 Glass Houses by Louise Penny (Kindle Locations 6462-6468)。 Kindle Edition。 。。。more

Louise Penny returned to strong storytelling with this one。 Action packed and so thrilling with a sad yet hopeful ending。 Still not a fan of the new narrator。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Spoiler:This plot line was pure fantasy。 Gamache led this drug overlord to believe he was incompetent for a whole year, just to have a shoot out instead of arrests。 Penny says this event is gonna have them WIN the war on drugs。 What? The cops got like 3 dudes。 I’m still annoyed and I finished this a week ago。

Pat

Gamache is head of the Suerte, but what is he doing letting drug shipments go through?

Good thing I also got the next volume at the library 'cause this one was more of a page-turner than usual, and I finished already! Armand's many talents have perhaps ascended to impossible heights with this case, but that can be forgiven considering the much-loved real man he was modeled on had just passed away when the book took form。 The historical revelations in this book were especially interesting, and the Ruth gets more complex with every appearance。 Onward to No。 14!
